DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance)

What It Does:
DMARC builds on SPF and DKIM by telling recipient servers what to do if an email fails those checks (allow it, quarantine it, or reject it).

Why It Matters to SMBs:
DMARC gives you visibility into who’s sending emails on your behalf and ensures only legitimate sources are trusted. It’s the frontline defense against email-based impersonation.

When It’s Set Up Right:

  • Complete control over your domain’s email authentication
  • Blocks unauthorized senders
  • Provides reports to help you monitor suspicious activity

If It’s Missing or Incorrect:

  • You have no way to stop attackers from using your domain
  • Higher risk of phishing and business email compromise (BEC)
  • You may unknowingly send emails that aren’t trusted or delivered

DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)

What It Does:
DKIM adds a digital signature to your outgoing email, allowing the recipient’s server to verify that the email hasn’t been altered and truly came from your domain.

Why It Matters to SMBs:
DKIM helps protect your brand reputation and builds trust with customers—especially if you send invoices, sensitive info, or marketing emails.

When It’s Set Up Right:

  • Emails are more likely to land in inboxes
  • Shows recipients your email is secure and trustworthy
  • Boosts performance of email marketing campaigns

If It’s Missing or Incorrect:

  • Your messages may be marked as suspicious or spam
  • Email security is weakened, leaving your domain vulnerable to impersonation
  • Potential legal or financial risk if malicious emails are sent “from you”

SPF (Sender Policy Framework)

What It Does:
SPF helps prevent spammers from sending emails on your behalf by verifying that your domain is allowed to send from specific mail servers.

Why It Matters to SMBs:
Many small businesses use third-party email tools like Mailchimp or Microsoft 365. Without SPF configured correctly, your emails may be flagged as spam—or worse, blocked completely.

When It’s Set Up Right:

  • Emails are delivered more reliably to inboxes
  • Reduces chances of spoofing (someone pretending to be you)
  • Improves your domain’s reputation

If It’s Missing or Incorrect:

  • Legitimate emails can end up in spam or be rejected
  • Your domain can be used in phishing attacks without you knowing
  • You may lose customer trust due to email delivery issues

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification)

What It Does:
BIMI allows you to display your brand logo next to your emails in the recipient’s inbox—building instant recognition and trust. It works alongside DMARC and shows users that your emails are verified and safe.

Why It Matters to SMBs:
BIMI makes your emails stand out visually and tells recipients, “This email really came from us.” It reinforces your brand and boosts credibility—especially important if you send customer updates, invoices, or marketing messages.

When It’s Set Up Right:

  • Your official logo appears next to emails in supported inboxes
  • Increases brand trust and email open rates
  • Shows you take email security seriously

If It’s Missing or Incorrect:

  • Your emails may blend in with generic messages, missing a chance to build recognition
  • You lose an opportunity to visually verify your brand
  • BIMI won’t work without proper DMARC enforcement—so you may need help setting both up
